Dr. Rick Smart was raised in Readfield, ME. He graduated from Kents Hill School and the University of Maine in Orono with a B.S. in Zoology. He attended New England College of Optometry in Boston, graduating in March 1983 with a Doctorate of Optometry. Dr. Smart spent the next 3½ years as Officer-in-Charge of the Optometry Clinic at Ft. Richardson Army Base in Anchorage, Alaska. After leaving military service, Dr. Smart established a private practice in Wasilla, Alaska. In March,1990, he moved back home to Maine and started a new practice. Dr. Smart enjoys providing full-service family eyecare with a special interest in contact lenses and laser vision correction.

Dr. Peter Paradis was born in Fort Kent in 1972. Growing up in Aroostook County implanted a good sense of family values and small town ethics. A diploma from Fort Kent Community High School, a cum laude Science Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maine at Farmington, and Doctor of Optometry degree from the New England College of Optometry in Boston round off his education achievements. His optometric clinical rotations were scattered around New England: Manchester VA Hospital, White River Junction VA Hospital, Lahey Clinic in Peabody and Burlington, MA, and Martha Eliot Hospital in Jamaica Plain, MA. Dr. Paradis has practiced optometry in Standish, ME and Lewiston, ME before joining Smart EyeCare Center in the Gardiner and Augusta locations.


Dr. Savage was raised in Caribou and graduated from high school in 1966. A veteran of the US Navy, he attended the University of Maine and graduated from The New England College of Optometry in 1977. He has practiced in Maine since 1977. He was a long time member of the Board of Directors of the Maine Optometric Association, serving as President of the MOA in 1977, and has been involved in legislation efforts. He holds an advanced therapeutic license and his main focus is primary eyecare.




Dr Desjardins was raised in Livermore, ME. She graduated from St. Joseph’s College Cum Laude with a B.A. in Biology. Dr. Desjardins received her clinical training from the New England College of Optometry. Her clinical training included rotations in ocular disease at Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, MA as well as VA Causeway, Boston, MA. Dr. Desjardins also worked at the South End Community Center. Dr Desjardins trained in low vision at the New England Medical Center, VA Jamaica Plain, and the Perkins School for the Blind, and the Cotting school for multi-handicapped children with learning disabilities.



Dr. Sarah Gladstone was raised in the greater Bangor area. She received her diploma from Hampden Academy and graduated cum laude from the University of Orono with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She received her Doctor of Optometry degree from The New England College of Optometry. Her optometric clinical training was completed at New England Eye Institute, South Boston Community Health Center, Manchester VA Hospital, Vision Care of Maine, and the Lahey Clinic. Dr. Gladstone is providing primary eye care for Smart EyeCare patients at the Bangor and Augusta locations.


Dr. Kaplan was born and raised in Rumford, Maine. She graduated in 1992 from the University of Maine at Orono Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in Zoology. She worked in an optometry office for a time before going on to school. She received her Doctorate of Optometry in 1998 from the New England College of Optometry. Her optometric clinical rotations were completed at the Manchester VA Hospital, White River Junction VA, Brighton Marine Hospital, the New England Eye Institute, and the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Dr. Kaplan has practiced optometry in Skowhegan, Gray and Rumford before joining SmartEyeCare Center.
